COACHING PATHWAYS

Coach Development Framework
and Pathways

Aligned with Sport New Zealand's Sport Pathways Framework, and developed in partnership with the WBA community, Badminton New Zealand, and Sport Waikato, the Framework focuses on building a safe and supportive environment for players and coaches across social, competitive, and performance domains.

    WBA Coach Development Framework Goals

Following a review of national standards and community engagement, WBA is implementing six key actions to build a sustainable system:

    1. Develop WBA Community Coaching Modules: Tailored education aligning with Badminton NZ standards.

    2. Launch a Coach Connection Forum: Regular networking for sharing best practices, with online and in-person sessions.

    3. Begin Coach Developer Training: Upskill local coaches to mentor others, partnering with Sport Waikato and Badminton NZ.

    4. Produce Practical Resources and Toolkits: Accessible tools for consistent training, distributed online and in-person.

    5. Ensure Coach & Player Pathway Alignment: Integrate pathways for seamless progression from grassroots to competitive levels.

    6. Form a WBA Coaching Advisory Group: A diverse group for strategic oversight.

    Coach Development Pathway

WBA's coach pathway provides education, ongoing development, and accreditation:

    • WBA Competitive: Annual program for coaches of competitive youth and adults, focusing on skills, tactics, and performance.

    • WBA Foundation: Annual program for coaches of beginners and developing players, emphasizing fun, inclusion, and fundamental skills.

    • Shuttle Time: One-off course preparing coaches to introduce badminton to kids aged 5-15 via school and entry-level programs.

    Badminton World Federation Accreditation

The WBA Foundation and Competitive programmes are designed to best prepare community coaches to progress to selection for the Badminton New Zealand delivered BWF Level 1, 2, and 3 accreditations.
